San Francisco is excellent for families in the spring. Temperatures are usually cool and comfortable, and many outdoor attractions are at their best before the summer crowds arrive.

Family Favorites

Explore Golden Gate Park

Golden Gate Park has playgrounds, gardens, lakes, and plenty of open space for kids to run around.

A highlight is the California Academy of Sciences, which combines:

  • An aquarium

  • A planetarium

  • A natural history museum

  • A living rainforest dome

Ride a Cable Car

A trip on San Francisco's historic cable cars is often a favorite memory for children and adults alike.

Visit the Waterfront

Pier 39 offers:

  • Sea lions

  • Street performers

  • Shops and snacks

  • Bay views

Nearby is Aquarium of the Bay.

Discover the Exploratorium

Exploratorium is one of the best hands-on science museums in the country. Kids can touch, experiment, build, and explore hundreds of interactive exhibits.

See the Golden Gate Bridge

For family-friendly views, try:

  • Crissy Field

  • Battery East Vista

Crissy Field also has a beach where children can play while adults enjoy bridge views.

Visit Alcatraz

Older children often enjoy touring Alcatraz Island and learning about its fascinating history. Advance reservations are highly recommended.

Easy Day Trips

  • Muir Woods National Monument — walk among giant coastal redwoods.

  • Sausalito — ferry ride, waterfront walks, and ice cream.

  • Bay Area Discovery Museum — designed specifically for younger children.

Spring Weather Tips

  • Typical highs: 55–70°F (13–21°C)

  • Bring layers; mornings and evenings can be chilly.

  • A light rain jacket is useful, especially in March and early April.
